I ran over a dog this morning.
No big deal. The dog ran out of the brush along the side of the road, I hit it while I was going about 30mph, flipped it, rolled it, knocked it back into the brush and kept driving. Never had time to react or hit my brakes.
Fortunately it didn’t do any damage to my car.
Did I stop and render assistance – or even consider doing so? Nope. Do I feel bad about hitting the stray dog? Nope. Do I care that I hit the stray dog? Nope.
You probably think I’m insensitive, unfeeling, cruel, mean, cold, heartless, and unkind to animals; but I’m not. I’m just tired. Tired of all the stray animals. Tired of the irresponsibility of animal owners. Tired of jogging and having to dodge piles of dog crap. Tired of walking, jogging or riding my bike and being chased by stray dogs. Tired of stray and loose dogs tearing into my garbage bins. I’m just tired. And if a few stray dogs have to die as a result, then so be it.
Don’t blame me – blame the pet owners, or blame animal control for not picking up strays, holding them for their owners to collect and then fining the owners for allowing their dogs to run free. Or perhaps animal control should simply pick up the strays and euthanize them all.
Regardless, pet owners have a responsibility to properly take care of their pets. Pet owners also have a responsibility to ensure that their pets do not negatively impact the lives of others. The owners of the strays are to blame.
That’s why I say, “If a few dogs have to die, then so be it.”
There are a lot of groups out there who will say, “Dogs don’t know any better,” or “dogs need attention,” or “dogs are just being dogs when they do that…” I don’t care. The owners of the animals know these things – or they shouldn’t own a dog. And if the Humane Society is upset with me for saying these things, then perhaps it's time for the Humane Society to petition the government for more stringent enforcement of animal control laws ALREADY IN PLACE THAT THEY AREN'T ENFORCING.
Dog ownership requires responsibility, yet in today’s “throw-away” society, people get dogs, put a bowl of food out once a week next to a rancid pail of water, and simply open the door and let their animals wander free. These same irresponsible cretins do just about the same thing with their kids. Then when their dog gets pancaked by a truck, their son gets hooked on drugs or their 12-year-old daughter gets knocked up by a 30-year-old, suddenly it's someone else's fault.
Here's the deal: if you own a dog, everything that happens to that dog is your responsbility and is the direct result of your actions. Period.
Dog owners who do not properly attend to their animals should be arrested – period. And if you are a dog owner that does not properly confine your animal to your home or your yard, or keep your dog on a leash when you are walking it, then perhaps someday I will personally have the indifferent experience of running over your pet. Then you can explain to your child that you’re an idiot.
And if I do happen to run over your stray dog you’ll be able to tell it’s me by the absence of illuminated tail lights.
At the end of the day who’s most cruel? The guy driving down the road on his way to work who hits a dog, or the insensitive, irresponsible moron who gets a dog and doesn’t properly care for it?
If you love your dog, act like it! Care for your pets or find someone who will. Otherwise be prepared to scrape them off the pavement with the knowledge of knowing that you killed your dog.
At the end of the day, your dog is not my responsibility; nor should it be my worry.
